NCA ACCREDITATION:
LU SELF-STUDY OVERVIEW

Introduction

Lincoln Unviersity is preparing its application for re-accreditation culminating with a North Central site visit scheduled for March 3-5, 2003. Dr. Joe Simmons has been appointed as coordinator of the NCA Self-Study Steering Committee.

Goals of the Self-Study

1. To gain continued accreditation;

2. To set up a comphrensive means of examining our institution in order to review both our strengths and weaknesses;

3. To document progress;

4. To provide a basis for future planning;

5. In this era of assessment, to assess ourselves.

General Institutional Requirements (GIRs)

and Criteria for Accrediation

The twenty-four GIRs ,the broadest parameters of the universe of higher education, must be met to hold affiliation with the NCA. Seven major areas encompass the GIRs: mission, authorizaiton, governance, faculty, educational programs, finance and public information. The GIRs set a basic expectation for all affiliated institutions of higher education and establish the foundation for the accreditation process.

The GIRs have a relationship with the five criteria. Each of the five criteria is related to several of the GIRs, but discussion of the criteria requires a greater breadth and depth of information related to a specific issue. The five criteria are:

1. The institution has clear and publicly stated purpose consistent with its mission and appropriate to an insttution of higher education;

2. The institution has effectively organized the human, financial and physical resources necessary to accomplish its purposes;

3. The institution is accomplishing its educational and other purposes;

4. The institution can continue to accomplish its purposes and strenghen its educational effectiveness;

5. The institution demonstrates integrity in its practices and relationships.

Various subcommittees will prepare responses to the GIRs and the Criteria for Accreditation.

Previous NCA Teams Concerns

The Self-Study Report will review and address the seven concerns expressed by the 1993 NCA Review Team. The subcommittee on Accreditation History and Progress will make recommendations to the steering committee who will be responsible for final approval.
